Although the world of Advertising is quite unfamiliar to me, it is a world that I'm very excited to discover and explore further.
As one of several lower division standing students, I have several doubts and uncertainties regarding what track should I go within the Advertising Major, what steps should I take in order to have a successful career, and so on. But, I believe I chose the right field to me, and these insecurities will gradually disappear as I gain more knowledge and experience.
Since the first time I stopped to think about my career and make plans to get a college degree, I knew that I wanted to study and work with something that would allow me to use my communication skills. I love to talk, to express myself, and to interact with other people.
What excites me about advertising is that it gives me the opportunity to do all that, and in addiction, I get to use my creativity and artistic skills as well. And this is amazing, because I love to write, to draw, to create, to innovate, to be original, and to do things differently than people would normally do.
Moreover, my dream has always been to impact people's life in some way, and advertising allows me to do that. Through Advertising, I get to interact with people from all parts of the world, to send them a message, and share information.
I remember watching a Mastercard Ad in my home country, Brazil, a couple of years ago, and this ad touched my heart and made me smile. Its message was so simple and had such a beautiful meaning. Plus, it was so easy for me to relate to this ad since it involved soccer, and had Pelé, who is the greatest soccer player of all time and Brazil's biggest idol and pride, in it. Therefore, I want to be able to bring this type of feeling into people's hearts, I want them not only to recognize the product I'm promoting, but to smile and feel good about the ad they just watched.
Here is the ad that particularly inspired me to pursuit a career in Advertising. Unfortunately, I could not find a subtitled version of it, so the ad is in Portuguese. However, I will briefly summarize it and its message: Brazilians are crazy about soccer. So, in Brazil, it's a tradition to collect cards with pictures of the players who play in the national team during every FIFA World Cup. These cards come in packages with five cards, but the coolest thing about collecting them, is that they are randomly assorted, so you never know what you will get, and it gets very hard to collect them all. Thus, in this ad, a young man sees Pelé in a restaurant, and he asks the legend to take a picture with the jersey that the Brazilian Soccer Team used in the 1958 FIFA World Cup. So the young man goes to a store, buys the jersey, and take the picture. Finally, when he gets home, he gives the picture to his grandfather whose only card he did not have in his collection was Pelé's. And at the end, a voice in the ad says: "To finally complete your card's collection: Priceless."
I hope everyone who read this post enjoyed it. I'm completely unfamiliar with blogging and this was my first blog post ever. I tried to do my best and express a little bit of my goals, fears, and dreams in the world of Advertising.
I hope you have fun while reading my journey on "Discovering Advertising".
